Exploring NYC and the only thing I could remember from childhood(vaguely) was this place. Seems a bit like NYC’s version of the 3rd St.Promenade in Santa Monica. Aka: a cool little place to shop/hang out.

Amazon Drops Price on Kindle E-Book Reader

by ThePete 12:24 pm 2008-06-27

So, I’m guessing print books are safe for a little while longer after getting an email from Amazon today announcing the (not-so-)whopping price drop of $40 (down from $399).

To me, this is still an absurd price to pay for a device that makes something I (hardly ever) do easier.

When the Kindle drops below $100, then I’ll start seriously considering it. For now, sorry, Amazon.

1st Broadway Show as a Manhattanite

by ThePete 8:33 pm 2008-06-20

Sweet–a Broadway show is a subway-ride away for us now and TheWife gotcheap tix for "Curtains" with David Hyde Pierce (whom she was in a showwith back in LA). We’re at intermission right now and the first act wasa lot of fun. David Hyde Pierce does a pretty mean Boston accent andcan even sing with it, go figure.

Welp house lights are down gotta go!

We’ve been here since 10:30ish and we’ve got everything for ourapartment aside from desks for TheWife and I. The announcer man told usto take our time and we did! Of course, spend as much money as we’respending and you wanna take your time.

I’m now getting looks from other folks in line that tell me they’rethinking: "How does that comic book geek afford three carts of Ikeacrap??"

Answer: I’m good at price hunting!

TheNYCMove day 34 (?): The 1st Wave

by ThePete 6:23 pm 2008-06-14
utterz-image
…of stuff!

This was the scene about 2 hours ago as I left TheApartment to run someerrands down in Soho. That’s the pile of stuff we’ve been living fromfor the past 3 weeks. There are 3 tiny shopping bags, a couple of smallboxes and half-a-bag of groceries at our friend David’s place still, butwe can go back to get those any time and just take the subway home.

We took a car service up and the driver was great–quiet, but great. Heseemed genuinely happy to help us get our stuff to our new home.

Since I left on my errands, a lot has happened.

Just as I was heading into the subway I heard a single crack ofthunder. I looked up to see clouds, but nothing directly overhead thatwas threatening. I shrugged and hopped on the A train and made my waydown to Soho xferring once.

When I resurfaced, everything was drenched but it wasn’t raining atall. However, it was still overcast. I smiled, proud that I had missedthe rain entirely.

I picked up a shower curtain, an air mattress and a huge Britta pitchertub thing along with a 5 pack of filters. However, as I eyed the 4 and5-cup coffee makers at the wholesale place I was shopping at, I heard acrazy-loud crack of thunder. By the time I made it to the cashier, itwas pouring down.

Luckily, I was about a half block from my subway stop, so I managed toavoid getting too wet…until I got to the stairs, that is.

The stairs that led down to the subway station were being drenched undera nearly constant shaft of water streaming down from the roof of anearby building. The roof seemed to be designed to spew water rightdown onto the steps and the wind made the shaft dance around the leftside of the stairwell, making any dry travel past it impossible.

One by one, all of us who needed that particular stop made our way pastthe shaft getting one side of our bodies pretty wet. As we reached thebottom of the stairs we came face-to-face with about a dozen peoleeyeing the stairs with extreme hesitation. To them there was a monsoonabove them. All they could see was the huge shaft of water splashingacross the stairs. The guy in front of me told them all it wasn’tcoming down anywhere near as hard once you got past the shaft of water.

As I type this, I’m back on the A heading uptown to TheNewPad. The guyon the loudspeaker just announced that the A is stopping at all localstops. For some reason he repeated it over and over.

"All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. All local stops. "

I guess people get mad when they get on a train that’s supposed to be anexpress only to have it make every stop on the long trip up theisland–something like 200 blocks and maybe 12 stops from where I goton.

So, that’s the latest! Tonight TheWife has a couple parties to go toand I have yet to decide if I’ll join her or not. I may just find a’Bucks and spend some quality time on the ‘net with some iced coffee. Ireally need to be more social, though. Maybe once we get moresettled…

It’s Father’s Day tomorrow! Don’t forget to call Poppy to wish him ahappy one!

Above is my website loading on my eee pc as it sits on the floor of ournew apartment!!!

Yep, we’re finally inside our new pad on the island of Manhattan. Westill have a LOT of work to do, though. Tomorrow we rent the moving vanand drive out to Jersey to get our stuff. Then we drive the van back tothe place we’ve been staying to grab all of the stuff we’ve been livingoff of and then, after hooking up with my friend Chris, drive the van upto our place on the north end of the island in an area called Inwood. Then we drag everything in. Then, on Sunday we make a trip to Ikea andorder delivery!

At least, that’s the plan. Actual results may vary, please check yourlocal listings for time and station, offer void in Utah. ;)

Of course because it’s already past 8pm we will be spending one morenight on our friend’s sofa bed. :(

But tomorrow night we’ll be sleeping in our own New York apartment!!!

Ron Paul: Quitter!!

by ThePete 1:47 am 2008-06-13
utterz-image
All right, so Ron Paul’s not a total quitter, but I don’t get why he won’t run as an independent candidate. I don’t like a goodly chunk of what he stands for, but ANY kind of viable 3rd party candidate would benefit our country. The two party system has gotten us into this two-country war, ruined our economy, stranded us with foreign oil as our only real energy source and helped rob us of any responsible news media.

SOMEone’s got to offer us real choice EVENTUALLY.

And no, I don’t have high hopes for Obama–he’s a Democrat after all… DUH… ;)

Oh yeah, got the above pic from: http://www.ronpaul2008.com/

The news said it would get down to 78 but not until 4 or 5AM.

TheNYC: 8th ave 14th Street Subway

This subway station is decorated with these whimsical little creaturesmade of bronze. They’re all sculpted in various stages of mischief. TheWife is taking a picture of one that is being eaten by an aligatorliving in the NYC sewers.

In the background you can see city contractors working on a subwaytrack. Just before I took this picture I heard some sort of authorityfigure yell at them about having just two hours to get the job done. How’s that for work incentive?

by ThePete 1:44 pm 2008-06-06
utterz-image
In or around New York City? Come see the APW Arts Munny Contest and Gallery show featuring custom toy art from some seriously brilliant artists–like ME and TheWife! That’s right–starting tomorrow, June 7, 2008, you’ll be able to stop by the APW Arts Gallery at 195 Chrystie St Ste 200, New York, NY 10002 and see artwork by myself and my wife Sierra!

The opening is tomorrow from 7-9 so if you can stop by then, that’d be even better–that’s when I’ll be going. If you can’t make it then, that’s OK–the show runs from June 7 to June 21. I’ll be posting pictures of our work soon, but if you can see it in person, that’s really the best.

Oh and our pieces are for sale, too–buy ‘em and support us! (Hey, just showing up supports us!)

Check out more about this event at http://APWArts.com/contest
